Atypical is a story that follows an 18-year-old who is on the autistic spectrum as he searches for love, independence, and answers to life's questions. While he is on his emotional journey of humor, fun, excitement, and intimidation of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives. Here are the (few) reasons why you should check out this humble yet real-world series...

1. It informs/educates us about how individuals on the spectrum react to situations, and what we can do to support others in these circumstances.

As a representative of a higher education institution, I do believe that we are making great strives towards supporting students who need the additional services to excel in-and-out of the classroom. However, there is still much that must be done in order to accommodate not only students on the spectrum, but all students who need some form of support. In Season 3 of Atypical (without spoiling much), Sam, the main character of the show, is beginning his first semester in college. At first, Sam was struggling with the changes happening around him; many individuals with autism are not comfortable with changes in their environment. Though most people recognize this, we still tend to only create cultures that are comfortable for the majority while (accidentally) neglecting others who may need the extra help. The show provides examples of how we can help these students' transitions into college such as - creating spacious, welcoming areas for ASD students, or simply having faculty commit their personal time to communicate with those who are struggling to comprehend.

2. It provides viewers with a reality check of families going through everyday dilemmas; showing that we all go through our own struggles.

It's never easy to have to go through life's struggles, but realize that you're not alone. It's important to talk to others about what's going on in your life, as this may help you get through whatever is holding you back from being the best you can be. Atypical does well in creating subliminal messages regarding the importance of sharing your feelings, thoughts, and beliefs with those who care for you. Sam, especially, who does not have a filter with anything he states, is a clear example of what we should all consider when going through tough times - telling others the truth. Those with ASD do not shy away from getting straight to the point with discussions because of their inabilities to tip-toe around the truth to ensure that no one gets hurt from what they say. Rather than look at this as a negative, Atypical shows that being this honest with others is important in developing meaningful relationships.

3. The show is surrounded in some serious topics such as faulty relationships, sexual identity, and bullying, but does so in a comedic fashion.

When I say comedic, I don't mean it's in the same footnote as Seinfeld, but it has a lighthearted perspective on subjects that are usually serious matters. Yes, there are occasions when the show has it's more dramatic moments, but it also has its times of comedy gold. It's important to learn about how we can help others through tough times, while it's just as significant to enjoy the little things in life (such as few jokes here-and-there).

Make sure to go on over to Netflix to begin watching Atypical. There are only three seasons so far, which means you're bound to catch up with a few watching binges. The episodes are not too long, either, so you'll be able to get through all three seasons in a breeze!
